Life in the field
Three days. 200 animals. Real impact.
A M.A.S.H. deployment is unlike anything else in the veterinary world. You’ll learn what’s possible and how to thrive with limited resources in almost any environment. Imagine you arrive at a community space, a gymnasium, a shelter facility, a church, a county building, and within 24 hours it becomes a fully operational surgical hospital. Over three days, the team performs a minimum 200 high-quality spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs, then packs up and moves on.
It is intense, efficient, and deeply rewarding. The communities we work with have often waited months or years for access to these services. When you show up, it matters.
Deployments run over weekends, spaced throughout the year. This isn’t a full-time position, it’s a recurring commitment that fits around your existing practice, on a schedule that works for you.

Questions
Frequently asked questions.
Is this a full-time position?
No. M.A.S.H. deployments run over weekends, spaced throughout the year. Most team members maintain their existing practice or position alongside their Animal Balance work. The schedule is flexible and discussed individually.
What states do you operate in?
Currently California, Texas, New Mexico, and expanding. We also deploy internationally, including in the Galápagos Islands. Geographic preferences are taken into account during scheduling.
Do I need HQHVSN experience to apply?
It's a strong advantage but not always a requirement depending on the role. What we need above all is solid surgical experience, a high standard of clinical practice, and the ability to perform in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
What does compensation look like?
Animal Balance offers competitive daily rates and accommodations during deployment for all deployed veterinary professionals. Specific rates are discussed during the application process.
What equipment and protocols does Animal Balance use?
All surgical supplies and equipment are provided by Animal Balance and meet the highest clinical standards. Our Medical Director oversees all protocols across every deployment. A full clinical handbook is available to all team members before their first deployment.
Can I join a single deployment to try it out?
Yes. Many of our team members start with a single deployment before committing to a recurring schedule. We encourage this, it's the best way to understand what MASH is and whether it's the right fit for you.
