Prevention Is The Cure

Animal Balance deploys expert HQHVSN teams to communities that need it most — sterilizing, vaccinating, educating — to end the cycle of animal suffering before it begins.

The challenge

The shelter system in the United States is broken and overburdened.

The root cause of pet homelessness is lack of free and affordable basic veterinary care. Animal Balance’s work will help to close that gap, permanently.

1 in 4 U.S. households can't access basic vet care

Vet costs have nearly quadrupled since 1997

Drop in shelter intake with consistent access to free spay/neuter

It starts with prevention

The M.A.S.H. Model that Animal Balance has been using for over 20 years is key.

"I've spent over 20 years sterilizing animals in some of the world's most remote places. The lesson is always the same: prevention works. It works in the Galapagos. It works in the USA. It works everywhere we've tried it. Now we need to make it a movement."

Three elements. One strategy.

M.A.S.H. Clinics

The Game Changer

High-quality, high volume mobile sterilization deployed directly into underserved communities. 200 animals – 3 days – Anywhere

Policy Change

Advocates for Animals

We don’t just operate within the system, we work to change it. In California we catalyzed AB 2010, legislation advancing through the state legislature to remove the regulatory barriers blocking M.A.S.H. clinics from operating at scale.

No Birth Movement

Shifting the Focus

We will never truly solve the problem until we change the culture. The No Birth Movement is a call to make prevention the social norm. It’s the next logical step from the roots the of the No-Kill movement.

The Galápagos: our proof of purpose.

The Galápagos is where, over the past 22 years, we have proven that empathy, strategy, and science work. Two decades of implementing our model have built something that didn’t exist before: a community that completely changed its relationship with companion animals. Today, on Isabela Island, 73% of the dogs and 79% in cats are sterilized and the local community seek out our services for their pets.

Now we must bring the Galápagos model to the United States.

Our impact — verified

Sterilization doesn't just help one animal. Every surgery prevents a cascade of unplanned births and the numbers compound fast.
