Animal Balance was built on a simple but radical idea: the most effective way to end animal suffering is to stop the conditions that create it. For over 22 years, we’ve been proving it works. M.A.S.H. (Mobile Animal Sterilization Hospitals) is our tool to make it happen.
How we work
Three levels & one strategy.
Sterilizing animals solves the immediate problem. But ending overpopulation permanently requires us to work in changing the systems and the culture that allow the problem to persist.
That’s why Animal Balance works on three levels simultaneously.

The systemic approach
We don’t just operate within the system, we work to change it. In the Galápagos, formal agreements with government agencies helped transform sterilization from an emergency intervention into official policy. In California, evidence from our work in the field helped catalyze AB 2010, a bill that is currently advancing through the state legislature to remove the regulatory barriers blocking MASH clinics from operating at scale.
No Birth Movement
The cultural shift
We need to go beyond operational and political strategies. The No Birth Movement is a call to make prevention the social norm; this is the next logical next step from the No-Kill Movement.
Where it all began
The Galápagos: our proof of concept.
Our most complete dataset comes from where it all began. Over two decades of sustained work across the Galápagos archipelago, Animal Balance has achieved above 75% sterilization rate in dogs and a 79% sterilization rate in owned cats on Isabela Island, figures that represent a genuine demographic shift in an animal population, not a temporary reduction.
In 2024, we completed the first full territory-wide census of dogs and cats on Isabela Island, giving us a verified baseline to track progress year after year. The data doesn’t just confirm what we’ve achieved — it tells us exactly what we need to do next.
